Parent issue: Improving the scholarly reputation of the RFC Series Specific issue: RFC are not indexed in online indexes such as: ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, Google Scholar

Size (time): 3-4 months Importance/Urgency: Med/Low

Problem Statement: In order to encourage the dissemination and use of the RFC Series, making sure the series is listed in various scholarly indexes would be a good thing. Doing so will require potential changes to web info and registration with those indexes. Other changes may be required.

RSE Actions:

  • Determine what changes in metadata or other info would facilitate the various scholarly indexes in picking up RFC
    • Follow up on possibility of adding DOI's to RFC
    • Consider a BibTeX format for sites to pull a bibliographic file format for inclusion in to indexes or resource source managers (i.e., Zotero - note that reference to the Citation Committee's work on citations and references should be valuable here

RSOC Actions:

  • none at this time

RFC Production Center & Publisher Actions:

  • For inclusion of RFCs hosted on rfc-editor-org in Google Scholar
    • RFCs are currently listed in Google Scholar with links to tools.ietf.org rather than rfc-editor.org.
    • This work can be done as part of both the Format changes (e.g. verify certain document metadata tags are include) and the website updates (e.g. verify robot/crawler accessibility)

Costs/Benefits

Financial: n/a

Project schedules:

  • The inclusion of RFCs through the rfc-editor.org site in to the Google Schoolar index can be done as part of both the Format changes (e.g. verify certain document metadata tags are include) and the website updates (e.g. verify robot/crawler accessibility)

Reputation: goal is to improve the overall reputation of the series
