One disadvantage of removing <note> is that would cause <abstract> to have to have <section> as a child element, but only if that <section> has an "unnumbered" attribute (or whatever we call it). That seems more complicated than leaving <note> there.

Having said that, the alternative of allowing <note> to appear at the end of <middle> and <back> seems to solve this.
