Donald's suggestion would seem to solve the problem of violating the
(very useful!) rule that citations and references must match.  In
addition, his proposed "few words" seem socially useful, if not
strictly necessary.

OTOH, the RFC Editor could consider the OBSOLETES: field as a citation,
I suppose.
