Does Notepad (Windows) count as "widely available"? I guess so. True, 
it's platform-specific, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't a open 
source counterpart on Unix (how about <http://kate.kde.org/> and 
<http://gedit.sourceforge.net/>?).
