I think that given that you don't want to drop the service, that you
should replace it with something more modern, on more modern equipment.
even majordomo1 with a backstore of rfc's likely has better spam
protection.
Ideally, you want to integrate one of these filters that sends out
a "I don't know you, please reply to me so you'll get past my spam
filter" type filters.
